Dr. Angela Esco Elder is an Associate Professor of History at Converse College. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Georgia and served as a postdoctoral fellow at Virginia Tech. Her research focuses on gender, emotion, and 19th-century America, particularly the experiences of Confederate widows during and after the Civil War. She has published widely, including her award-winning book Love and Duty: Confederate Widows and the Emotional Politics of Loss (2022). Dr. Elder teaches courses on American history, women’s history, and unique topics like 'Duels, Disease, and Disaster: Death in 19th Century America.' She has received numerous accolades, such as the Joe Ann Lever Award of Excellence and the SCICU Teaching Excellence Award. Her current research explores Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas, supported by a Franklin Grant from the American Philosophical Society. She has secured grants from institutions like Duke University, the Filson Historical Society, and Louisiana State University.
