Dr. Angela Elder is an Associate Professor of History at Converse University, specializing in American resilience, 19th-century social dynamics, and military history. Her current research focuses on the Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson, examining themes of resilience through the lens of diverse populations in challenging environments. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Georgia and has been a Virginia Center for Civil War Studies postdoctoral fellow at Virginia Tech.
Her teaching portfolio includes courses on the Civil War, women’s history, and unique topics like 'Duels, Disease, and Disaster: Death in 19th Century America.' She has received accolades for teaching excellence from both students and SCICU.
Research Interests: Dr. Elder’s work explores how resilience manifests through historical conflicts, environmental challenges, and social hierarchies. Her Franklin Grant-supported project analyzes the Dry Tortugas as a microcosm of 19th-century American struggles, involving military personnel, enslaved individuals, and diverse communities.
