Dr. Angela Bourne is a Professor at Roskilde University's Department of Social Sciences and Business, affiliated with the Institute for Social Science and Business. Her work focuses on comparative European politics, European Union studies, and opposition strategies against populist parties. She holds a BA from Queensland University, an MA from Lancaster University, and a PhD from the University of Bristol.
Her research explores militant democracy, the effectiveness of opposition to populist parties, and Europeanization processes. Current projects include the Carlsberg Foundation-funded study on opposition to populism and the EU's role in accommodating regional differences. She teaches courses on globalization, populism, EU institutions, and security studies.
Key publications include Democratic Dilemmas: Why Democracies Ban Political Parties (2018) and edited volumes on populism and democratic defense. She leads international collaborations and has been involved in projects like the Trans4demo initiative (2025–2027) addressing contentious politics and sustainability transitions.
Her work bridges political theory and empirical research, emphasizing multilevel governance, minority politics, and responses to extremism. She has contributed to datasets mapping opposition initiatives against populist parties across Europe.
