Angel David Nieves is a Professor of Africana Studies, History, and Digital Humanities at Northeastern University, and Director of Public Humanities. His research focuses on the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and technology in the U.S. and South Africa. He leads projects such as the Soweto Historical GIS Project and the Virtual Freedom Trail Project, leveraging digital tools to explore historical and spatial narratives.
His research affiliations include the NULab for Digital Humanities and the Computational Social Science Center, as well as the Center for International Affairs & World Cultures. Past projects include the Soweto ’76 Archive and 3D Historic Sites Database, emphasizing digital preservation of marginalized histories.
Publications include An Architecture of Education: African American Women Design the New South (2018) and a co-edited volume on African American place-making (2008). His work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary digital methodologies, addressing issues of memory, identity, and spatial justice.
