Angel Carrancho Alonso serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Geography and Communication at the Faculty of Humanities and Communication, Universidad de Burgos. His research bridges prehistoric archaeology with geophysical methodologies, focusing on Holocene fire records and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
He earned his PhD from Universidad de Burgos in 2010 with the thesis "Arqueomagnetismo y magnetismo de las rocas en registros de fuegos arqueológicos holocenos aplicación a sedimentos kársticos (yacimientos de la sierra de Atapuerca y cueva del Mirón) y recreaciones experimentales," supervised by Dr. Juan José Villalaín Santamaría and Dr. Josep Vallverdú Poch. His doctoral work established experimental frameworks for analyzing archaeological fire sites through rock magnetism.
Dr. Carrancho Alonso leads research within the PALEOMAG-UBU Paleomagnetism group (Consolidated Research Unit 165), applying archaeomagnetic techniques to sites including Sierra de Atapuerca and Cueva del Mirón. His interdisciplinary approach integrates geophysics with Quaternary paleoecology to reconstruct ancient human-environment interactions.
He actively participates in the interuniversity PhD program on Human Evolution, Quaternary Paleoecology and Applied Geophysical Techniques, supervising doctoral candidates in geophysical applications for archaeological research. His work emphasizes experimental recreation of archaeological fire scenarios to validate magnetism-based dating methods.
