Dr. Angel C. de Dios is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Georgetown University since 2000. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1992) and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1992-1995). His research focuses on NMR spectroscopy and computational chemistry, particularly exploring chemical shifts in biomolecules and antimalarial drug mechanisms. He directs the Georgetown 500 MHz NMR Facility and has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles. Notable awards include the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (1999-2003) and the Dean's Excellence in Teaching Award (2004).
- Education:
- B.S., Ateneo de Manila University (1985)
- Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago (1992)
Research interests include theoretical NMR shielding calculations, drug-heme interactions, and development of computational methods for chemical shift analysis. His work bridges quantum chemistry with experimental NMR techniques to study biomolecular systems. Recent projects involve antimalarial drug mechanisms and structural elucidation of natural products.
Key contributions include pioneering studies on quinoline drug-heme complexes and computational models predicting protein NMR chemical shifts. Grants supported by NSF, ACS Petroleum Research Fund, and Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation.
- Awards:
- NSF CAREER Award (1999-2003)
- Camille & Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award (1995-2000)
- Babler Teaching Award (1988)
Teaching responsibilities include courses in quantum chemistry, physical chemistry, and molecular spectroscopy. Active in academic service roles, including GRE Chemistry Committee membership and editorial work for NMR-focused symposia.
