Andy Marshall

Andy Marshall is a conservation scientist and Associate Professor in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York. He serves as Principal Investigator for active research projects including CIRCLE (Collaboration for Integrated Research, Conservation and Learning) and the Udzungwa Forest Project, and is currently accepting PhD students.

Marshall's research centers on tropical forest conservation, focusing on human and environmental impacts on ecosystem health. His work in Tanzania assesses forest degradation effects on biodiversity and biomass, and develops restoration methods through initiatives like the Forest Restoration and Climate Experiment (FoRCE). He also evaluates the societal benefits of protected areas and the conservation role of zoos, with data contributing to continental and global assessments of species and productivity.

His recent publications highlight community forest management, remote sensing for degradation assessment, and carbon dynamics in African montane forests. These studies integrate ecological fieldwork with social science and remote sensing to inform global conservation strategies and climate change mitigation.

Marshall mentors PhD students and has established Reforest Africa and the Udzungwa Forest Project. His funded projects include CIRCLE (£41,467.50), Udzungwa Forest Project (£207,158.94 from Flamingo Land Ltd. and United Bank of Carbon), and a Udzungwa Mountains restoration plan ($35,000). He has secured diverse grants for tropical forest research and community conservation.

He directs a tropical forest Nature Reserve in Tanzania and collaborates with Flamingo Land and the United Bank of Carbon. His work extends to zoo conservation planning, where he developed a biodiversity action framework adopted by multiple institutions, and serves on committees like DEFRA Zoos Expert Committee (2015-2019).
