Dr Andy Letcher is a Lecturer at the Department of Psychology, University of Exeter. He began his career as an Ecologist and later transitioned to the Study of Religion, focusing on 'dark green' religions such as Paganism, shamanism, animism, and psychedelic spiritualities.
- Education: D.Phil in Ecology from Merton College, University of Oxford (1990s), PhD in Study of Religion from King Alfred's College, Winchester (2000s)
His research explores the intersection of psychedelic experiences and religiosity/spirituality, including the psychological dimensions of mysticism, ritualised consumption of psychedelics, and the theological assumptions underlying psychedelic research. He is also interested in the contemporary use of the Fly Agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria).
Before joining Exeter in 2023, he taught postgraduate courses at Schumacher College for seven years, where he designed the MA Engaged Ecology program, and served as an Associate Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University and Bath Spa University for many years.
