Andy Evans

Andy Evans is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at SUNY New Paltz. His teaching focuses on modern Europe, Germany, the World Wars, and twentieth-century European history. His research explores the intersection of cultural history and anthropology in twentieth-century Germany, particularly examining how World War I influenced German anthropologists' shift toward race science. He has been recognized with awards including the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2023-24) and the New Paltz Teacher of the Year Award.

His publications include Anthropology at War: World War I and the Science of Race in Germany (2010) and co-authored editions of Discovering the Western Past. His articles analyze topics like Nazi race science in Upper Silesia, photographic competitions in Weimar Germany, and the impact of wartime conditions on anthropological practices. Evans is actively involved in academic networks, co-founding the German Studies Association Teaching Network and the German Studies Collaboratory editorial board.

His work bridges historical analysis with pedagogical innovation, emphasizing public engagement through digital resources and collaborative scholarship.
