معرفی
Andy Clayden is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield's School of Architecture and Landscape, where he has taught since 1994 after completing his MA in Landscape Architecture at the same institution. His career bridges academic research, landscape design practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration, with significant contributions to understanding cemetery landscapes and sustainable urban design.
His educational background includes a geography degree from the University of Wales (1986) followed by hands-on experience in landscape design-build before pursuing his MA. This practical foundation informs his teaching approach, which emphasizes direct engagement with landscape materials and temporal processes.
Clayden's research centers on cemetery landscapes as critical yet undervalued urban green spaces, with pioneering work on natural burial grounds. He examines how burial landscapes evolve culturally and ecologically, their contribution to ecosystem services, and their potential in climate-resilient urban planning. His methodology combines archival research, GIS, field studies, and visual documentation, maintaining a strong landscape perspective throughout.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals consistent focus on cemetery landscapes (particularly natural burial) and sustainable urban design, with increasing interdisciplinary depth. The work shows longitudinal commitment to specific sites like natural burial grounds, while expanding to war cemeteries and tropical urban parks. Key trends include growing attention to climate adaptation, cross-cultural comparisons, and the emotional dimensions of designed deathscapes.
As a supervisor, Clayden has guided six PhD students through diverse projects including sustainable urban parks in Kuala Lumpur, green school grounds in England, and grave reuse studies. His research has been supported by significant grants including a £302,985 ESRC award (2007-2010) on natural burial and a National House Building Council grant for residential landscape sustainability.
He actively contributes to the university's Creative Spatial Practices research cluster and University Estates public realm planning, while maintaining professional design practice on projects ranging from RHS climate change demonstration gardens to industrial site regeneration.
