Andy Borum is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Vassar College, where he has been since 2022. His research focuses on applied mathematics, mechanics, robotics, and optimal control, with a particular emphasis on elastic structures, robotic manipulation, and nonlinear systems. Borum earned his BS from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, followed by an MS and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
His work explores topics such as the stability of elastic rods, robotic systems for material testing, and mathematical modeling of biomechanical systems. He has contributed to advancements in inverse optimal control, hemodynamics in vascular networks, and the dynamics of knotted structures.
Recent research highlights include studies on helical elastic rods, snap buckling in knots, and automated stability testing of elastic materials using robotics. His interdisciplinary approach bridges mathematics, engineering, and physics, with applications in biomedical devices and robotics.
Borum has been actively involved in academic grants and initiatives, including contributions to the Vassar Institute for the Liberal Arts' programs. His publications reflect a commitment to advancing both theoretical frameworks and practical engineering solutions in dynamic systems.
