Andrés Hincapié is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on entrepreneurship, labor economics, health economics, and structural microeconometrics. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis (2017), an M.A. in Economics from El Colegio de México (2010), and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, Colombia (2006).
His professional experience includes roles as a Technical Research Assistant at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (2015-2016), and teaching positions at UNC Chapel Hill (since 2017), Washington University in St. Louis, and El Colegio de México. He has received numerous awards, including the DITE Fellowship (Duke University) and the Fox International Fellowship (Yale University).
Hincapié’s research explores topics such as entrepreneurial dynamics, medical innovation diffusion, intergenerational effects of parental leave policies, and health disparities. He has published in journals like the International Economic Review and the Journal of Human Capital. His work has been funded by grants from NSF, NBER-IFS, and UNC.
He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Health Economics and has organized the Applied Micro Triangle Conference with Duke and NC State. Beyond academia, Hincapié is co-founder of The Mix(ed)tape Podcast, focusing on Afro-Latinx cultural education, and has been involved in dance performance and teaching through the Cobo Brothers Dance Company.
