André Potvin is a Full Professor at the Université Laval School of Architecture since 1999. He obtained his PhD in architecture from the University of Cambridge and co-founded the Groupe de recherche en ambiances physiques (GRAP). His work focuses on bioclimatic and carbon-neutral architecture, urban microclimatology, and environmental adaptability with expertise in integrated design processes (IDP).
- Ph.D., University of Cambridge
- M.Sc., Université Laval
- B.Sc., Université Laval
- DEC, Collège de Limoilou
His research spans Arctic architecture, biophilic design, and sustainable building strategies. He supervises graduate students in interdisciplinary projects related to environmental impact of the built environment through the CIRCERB chair and Sentinel-North program. His work includes the Acting on Climate Change manifesto with over 60 Canadian researchers.
Recent publications explore Arctic housing, thermal anomalies, photobiological lighting, and urban microclimatology. He developed immersive visualization systems and biophilic intermediate spaces. Awards include multiple ACSA-AIA TOP TEN COTE for Students (2019-2024), Blue Award International (2016), and Durabilys prizes (2015).
- ACSA-AIA TOP TEN COTE: 8 awards (2019-2024)
- Blue Award International: Wood Innovation (2016)
- Durabilys: 1st/2nd prizes (2015)
- Autodesk-AIA: 2nd prize + honorable mention (2014)
- ACSA Sustainable Buildings: 1st prize (2012)
He leads major research initiatives with over $13.5M in grants from NSERC-SSHRC, Sentinel North, and FQRNT. Projects include Biophilic design in the Arctic ($744k), Arctic greenhouse projects (5 projects), and CIRCERB 2.0 ($5M). He collaborates with CRAD, CIRODD, and PLEA networks.
