André Naffis-Sahely is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of California, Davis. He specializes in poetry, translation, and literary criticism, with a focus on Francophone and Italophone literature from the Caribbean and Maghreb, as well as works in Venetian and Istrian. Born in Venice to an Iranian father and Italian mother, he grew up in Abu Dhabi and was educated in Britain, earning a BA and PhD from the University of Leicester and an MLitt from the University of St Andrews.
His academic and creative work includes two poetry collections, The Promised Land and High Desert, and the anthology The Heart of a Stranger: An Anthology of Exile Literature. He has translated over twenty titles, including works by Honoré de Balzac and Tahar Ben Jelloun, with several translations recognized as 'books of the year' by NPR, The Guardian, and the Financial Times.
- Editorial Roles: Poetry editor of Ambit (2018-2020) and Poetry London (2021-2024), establishing a chapbook prize and lecture series with the T.S. Eliot Foundation and Goldsmiths University.
- Awards & Fellowships: Includes the PEN Translates! Award, Neustadt International Prize judging role, MacDowell Colony Fellowship, and AHRC Fellowship.
His research and publications explore themes of exile, cultural hybridity, and the intersections of poetry and translation. He has held teaching positions at UCLA, Occidental College, and Whittier College, including a stint as the English Department’s Author in Residence at UCLA in 2020.
