André Michael Strydom

André Michael Strydom is Professor of Physics at the University of Johannesburg (South Africa), where he has been based since 2001. He also maintains active affiliations with the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (Germany) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, reflecting his long-standing international collaboration network.

Research Interests

• Magnetism and magnetic materials
• Physical properties of intermetallic compounds
• Heavy-fermion systems and spin-liquid states
• Magnetocaloric effects and quantum Griffiths singularities

His work combines fundamental studies of quantum magnetic phenomena with applied investigations of functional magnetic materials, often employing neutron-scattering techniques and low-temperature measurements.

Across more than three-hundred peer-reviewed articles, Strydom’s recent output is dominated by studies of rare-earth and actinide intermetallics, geometrically frustrated magnets, and the interplay between electronic correlations and crystal-field effects in strongly correlated electron systems.

These awards have underpinned extensive experimental campaigns using national and international neutron and synchrotron facilities, as well as the training of numerous postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers.

Laboratory & Collaborations

Strydom leads a low-temperature physics laboratory at the University of Johannesburg equipped for magnetometry, specific-heat, and electrical-transport measurements down to millikelvin temperatures. He is an active member of the Max Planck–University of Johannesburg Joint Research Group and participates in the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ cooperative projects on quantum materials.
