András Lakatos

Dr András Lakatos is an Affiliated Principal Investigator at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute with departmental affiliation in Cambridge Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. He leads a regenerative neurobiology laboratory while practicing clinical neurology as an academic Consultant at Addenbrooke's Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Dr Lakatos obtained his medical degree and completed his PhD studies in glial cell biology at the Beatson Institute and University of Cambridge, followed by two years of postdoctoral research in neuroregeneration. He then completed basic specialty training in general medicine and higher specialist training in neurology at Cambridge University Hospitals.

His research program investigates how astrocytes regulate neuronal network development and function in health and how these processes are disrupted in neurodegenerative diseases. Dr Lakatos' laboratory employs mouse and human stem cell-based disease models combined with cell-type specific transcriptomics and computational approaches to explore astrocyte-neuron interactions, with particular focus on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). His work aims to identify mechanisms that could provide alternative neuroprotective therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr Lakatos has received significant recognition for his work:

• MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship (2017)

As a clinician-scientist, Dr Lakatos maintains active collaborations with researchers at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Wellcome Trust-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, and European Bioinformatics Institute. His key collaborators include David Rowitch, Thora Karadottir, and Kristian Franze, with whom he conducts interdisciplinary research bridging basic science and clinical applications in neurodegenerative disease.
