Andries Marees is a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Economics within the School of Business and Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He holds a PhD in Statistical Genetics (2019) and a Master's in Biomedical Sciences (2015), both from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on applying statistical methods to study the genetic architecture of health and social-scientific outcomes, with a particular emphasis on substance use, socioeconomic status, and mental health. His work addresses biases in large-scale genetic studies, such as volunteer bias in the UK Biobank, and explores genetic influences on health disparities.
- Education:
- PhD in Statistical Genetics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2019)
- Master's in Biomedical Sciences (Medical and Behavioral Genomics, Psychophysiology), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2015)
Research interests include genome-wide association studies (GWAS), genetic epidemiology, and the interplay between genes and socioeconomic factors. He has published in high-impact journals like Nature Communications and presented at conferences such as the World Congress of Psychiatric Genetics. His contributions address critical methodological challenges in genetic research, including selection bias and volunteer bias in cohort studies.
Awards:
- ECIP Travel Award (2018)
Advancing Research: Collaborates on projects exploring genetic correlates of socioeconomic status and their impact on health outcomes. His work aims to refine genomic methodologies to improve the accuracy of large-scale population studies.
