Andrew Wayne is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Guelph, specializing in philosophy of science and history and philosophy of modern physics. His research focuses on topics such as scientific explanation, reduction/emergence in physics, and modelling/idealization in science. He holds a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego.
- Education:
- B.Sc., University of Toronto
- M.A., University of California, San Diego
- Ph.D., University of California, San Diego
His research interests include unification of scientific theories, historical development of particle physics and quantum field theory (1930–present), and the role of idealizations in model-based explanations. Current projects involve completing a book on scientific explanation.
His publications span influential journals like Philosophy of Science, Synthese, and European Journal for Philosophy of Science, addressing themes such as non-causal explanation, explanatory asymmetry, and the philosophical implications of quantum field theory.
Dr. Wayne’s work critically engages with foundational debates in physics, emphasizing the integration of local models with global theories to justify explanatory power.
