Andrew Tyler Putnam

Andrew Tyler Putnam, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (General Medicine) and Assistant Professor of Nursing at Yale University, affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine. He serves as Director of Palliative Pain and Symptom Management in Palliative Medicine and is part of the Yale Institute for Global Health. His clinical and research focus includes pain/symptom management in severe illnesses, physician-patient communication, and palliative care education. Dr. Putnam previously directed Georgetown University's Palliative Care Program for 11 years before joining Yale.

Education: BA in History from Yale University (1980); MD from University of Connecticut School of Medicine (1996). Completed residency and internship in Family Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook (1997–1999) and a palliative medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (2001).

Research Interests: Palliative care delivery, symptom management (pain, nausea, dyspnea), end-of-life decision-making, and medical education in palliative care. He has contributed to textbooks and peer-reviewed journals on topics like nutrition at life's end, medical student competency assessments, and symptom control.
