Professor Andrew Tutt serves as Director of the Breast Cancer Now Research Unit at King's College London and holds the position of Professor of Breast Oncology and Head of Division of Breast Cancer Research at the Institute of Cancer Research. He is also an Honorary Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Breast Unit of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) and a faculty member of the Research Oncology section at King's College London School of Medicine.
His educational background includes a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Bristol (1990) and a PhD from the Institute of Cancer Research (2002), where he worked on BRCA2 gene functions under Professor Alan Ashworth. He completed clinical oncology training at the Royal Marsden Hospital and has held visiting positions at British Columbia Cancer Agency and Harvard Medical School as a Jean Lubrano Visiting Scholar.
Professor Tutt's research focuses on Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) and cancers associated with BRCA1/BRCA2 deficiencies. His work spans translational research, biomarker discovery, and clinical trials development, with particular emphasis on PARP inhibitors and DNA damage response mechanisms. He has established a comprehensive research program that bridges laboratory discoveries with clinical applications, publishing in top journals including Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on molecular mechanisms of treatment resistance in BRCA-deficient cancers, particularly PARP inhibitor resistance through BRCA reversion mutations. His work increasingly integrates DNA damage response with immune markers to develop predictive biomarkers for treatment response in TNBC. The TNT trial research forms a significant foundation for his current work on personalized treatment approaches for hereditary breast cancers.
- Breakthrough Clinician Scientist Fellowship (2001)
- Clinical Excellence Awards (2 Local Awards at GSTT) (2001)
Professor Tutt serves as Chief Investigator for the UKCRN Triple Negative Trial recruiting across 65 Cancer Units in the UK and co-leads the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Trial initiative for the Breast International Group. He advises Cancer Research UK and Cancer Research Technology on cancer therapy discovery as a member of the Discovery Committee. His laboratory program at King's College London focuses on discovering and validating biomarkers and therapy targets for Triple Negative Breast Cancer, with several active research projects funded by organizations including the Butterfield Trust and MRC Medical Research Council.
He leads the Breast Cancer Now Toby Robins Research Centre and directs research programs investigating immune responses against triple negative breast cancers, tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, and novel therapeutic approaches including pharmaco-immunotherapy and IgE-targeted treatments. His work contributes significantly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
