Dr. Andrew Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Swansea University, affiliated with the School of Psychology within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from Cardiff University and a PhD from Swansea University under Prof. Steve Stewart-Williams. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research focuses on evolutionary psychology, particularly sex differences, relationship preferences, and mate selection dynamics, with a recent emphasis on incels, male mental health, and cross-cultural studies. He supervises PhD and MSc students on topics like incel harm pathways and sexual harassment. His work has been published in journals such as Archives of Sexual Behavior, Evolutionary Psychological Science, and Nature Human Behaviour.
Dr. Thomas’s research explores questions like: What attributes are attractive in partners? How do cultural and situational factors influence mating strategies? His studies address evolutionary mismatch, the psychology of involuntary celibacy, and the societal impacts of sexual harassment. He has contributed to global collaborations, including projects on pandemic behavior and social distancing interventions.
His academic roles include teaching modules on evolutionary perspectives in relationships and supervising independent research projects. He is a founding member of the Welsh Evolutionary Psychology Network (WEPN).
