Dr. Andrew Stewart is the Scientific Director of the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Institute (DOMI) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. As a leading researcher in diabetes, he has established himself as an authority on human insulin-producing pancreatic beta cell replication and regeneration.
Dr. Stewart's research interests focus on understanding and developing novel therapies for inducing human beta cell regeneration, spanning from gene therapy to small molecule drug discovery. His laboratory has made several groundbreaking discoveries in the field, including being the first to demonstrate that growth factors could drive beta cell replication in vivo in mammals, the first to define cell cycle control in rodent and human beta cells, and the first to report that DYRK1A inhibitors can induce human beta cell replication and reverse diabetes in animal models.
With 229 publications to his name, Dr. Stewart's work has established significant trends in diabetes research, particularly in the areas of beta cell regeneration and small molecule therapeutics. His research bridges basic science discoveries with translational applications for diabetes treatment.
- Continually supported by NIH/NIDDK
- Supported by JDRF funding
- Leadership of DOMI research initiatives
Dr. Stewart maintains an active research laboratory (Stewart Laboratory) focused on developing next-generation DYRK1A inhibitors for human diabetes treatment and understanding why human beta cells are so refractory to replication. His work has significant implications for developing curative approaches for diabetes.
