Andrew Stevens is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham in the Inflammation and Ageing group. He is also affiliated with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Stevens is pursuing a PhD at the University of Birmingham under the supervision of Professors Antonio Belli and Zubair Ahmed.
Education:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) with Distinction in Research, University of Birmingham (2016)
- Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSc) with First-Class Honours, University of Birmingham (2013)
- Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) (2019)
- Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) (2018)
Stevens’s research focuses on promoting repair and recovery after neurotrauma, particularly in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI). He investigates photobiomodulation and optical spectroscopic methods to treat and monitor the injured central nervous system. His work integrates molecular neuroscience and optical engineering, with an emphasis on translating these therapies into clinical settings via medical device development.
His recent publications span topics such as photobiomodulation in SCI, neutrophil extracellular traps as therapeutic targets in TBI, pharmacological interventions for TBI sequelae, and neurodiagnostic studies in sports-related concussion. These works highlight his expertise in systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and translational neuroscience.
Scientific Awards:
- Neurotrauma Research Fellowship
- Surgical Research Fellowship, Royal College of Surgeons of England
- Wellcome Trust Translational Development Fund
Stevens actively contributes to clinical research projects in neurotrauma, including TBI, SCI, neurocritical care, and concussion. He collaborates with multidisciplinary teams across the University of Birmingham campus and holds a principal investigator role for the project Mechanisms of photobiomodulation as a therapeutic approach for neurotrauma.
