Dr Andrew Stephens is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering & Robotics, Queensland University of Technology (QUT). As director of the ACE Lab, he bridges biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, and cardiovascular medicine to innovate medical devices and AI-driven clinical solutions. His work focuses on emergency medicine, mechanical circulatory support (ECMO, ventricular assist devices), and smart device development.
His research spans Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Devices, and Hemodynamic Modeling. He has contributed to critical areas such as ECMO survival prediction using neural networks, ventricular assist device control via fiber-optic sensors, and anatomical compatibility of cardiac devices.
Recent publications highlight advancements in ECMO PAL (AI-based mortality prediction), HeartMate 3 hemodynamic evaluation, and valvular heart disease modeling. His work emphasizes translating engineering innovations into clinical practice to improve patient outcomes in critical care settings.
