Andrew Smith is a Professor of Cinema and Digital Media at the University of California, Davis. He holds an M.A. in Film Studies and an M.F.A. in Poetry from the University of Iowa. Known for his work as a screenwriter, filmmaker, and educator, Smith has collaborated with his twin brother Alex on several acclaimed films, including Walking Out (Sundance Grand Jury nominee), Winter in the Blood, and The Slaughter Rule. Their projects often explore themes of identity, rural existence, and historical narratives.
Smith’s films have been distributed by IFC Films and recognized for their artistic merit. He has contributed scripts and TV pilots to studios like HBO, Warner Bros., and FX, including adaptations of works by James Welch and Wallace Stegner. Currently, he is developing projects such as American Radical, The Better Angel, and a feature film adaptation of Night of the Grizzlies.
Previously, Smith taught at the University of Montana (2005–2015) and the University of Iowa. He co-hosts the Cinema and Digital Media Lecture Series at UC Davis. His work bridges academic and creative realms, emphasizing storytelling’s intersection with cultural and historical contexts.
