Dr. Andrew Smith is a Lecturer in the School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment at Edinburgh Napier University, where he serves as Programme Leader for MSc Facilities Management and MSc Real Estate Management and Investment. He is also the Built Environment Subject Lead for Learning and Teaching. His academic and professional affiliations include the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (CIWFM), Chartered Management Institute (MCMI), and Advance HE (Senior Fellow).

Dr. Smith's research focuses on the built environment, particularly facilities and workplace management, real estate, sustainability, indoor environmental quality, and higher education pedagogy. His work explores the relationship between people and their working environments, with recent projects examining the wellbeing effects of indoor plants, indoor conditions in primary schools, and BIM integration in healthcare construction. He also investigates emotional intelligence in the construction industry and sustainable facilities management in Nigeria.
His 15 most recent publications reveal a strong trend in sustainable and data-driven facility management, with increasing emphasis on digital transformation through BIM, environmental performance in educational and commercial buildings, and the health impacts of indoor environments. Dr. Smith has received the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Journal of Facilities Management in 2016 and 2019. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including Sustainability, International Journal of BIM and Engineering Science, and Journal of Facilities Management, where he has also acted as Guest Editor for special issues on sustainability and workplace management.
As an experienced PhD supervisor and examiner, Dr. Smith currently supervises multiple doctoral candidates on topics such as indoor environmental interventions in schools, BIM in healthcare FM, and social robots for wellbeing. He has served as an external examiner for universities including Liverpool John Moores University, University of Wales Trinity St David, and RMIT University. His research is supported by both internal and external funding, including industry collaborations and pre-Napier projects on office plant interventions.
Dr. Smith is actively involved in research groups including the Institute for Sustainable Construction and the Centre for Higher Education Research.
