Andrew Smaldone is a Professor of Fine Arts and Academic Dean at Santa Reparata International School of Art (SRISA) in Florence, Italy, where he has been teaching painting, drawing, and contemporary art theory since 2007. He also serves as a Lecturer at Washington University St. Louis in Florence and NYU Florence.
Smaldone completed his MA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 2005 and earned a BA with honors from The George Washington University, where he received the four-year Presidential Arts Scholarship. His artistic practice explores concepts of surface and space, particularly focusing on what he terms the 'non-space'—a concept describing something present yet not tangible or usually seen.
His work has evolved significantly since 2005, with recent exhibitions including 'Dreaming Elsewhere' (2023) at Stanza 251 in Florence and 'Correlative' (2022-2023) at SRISA. His artistic output demonstrates a consistent exploration of spatial concepts through painting, with recent works like the 'Stairway' series (2025) examining architectural elements and spatial relationships.
His artistic contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2015) and multiple Sabbatical Leaves for Scholarly Research (2016, 2024). He has also received residencies such as the Made In Filandia Residence (2015) and the L'AHAH Residence in Paris (2018).
