Andrew Shanken is a Professor of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in architectural and urban history, memory and the built environment, and historiography. He serves as the Director of American Studies and Faculty Curator of the Environmental Design Archives, with affiliations at the Townsend Center for the Humanities and Global Urban Humanities. His teaching spans courses on the unbuilt, historiography, urban diagrams, and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

- B.A. in History and the Growth and Structure of Cities from Haverford College
His research explores intersections of memory, consumer culture, and architectural representation, with a focus on paper architecture, themed landscapes, and heritage conservation. Key publications include 194X (2009), Into the Void Pacific (2015), and the forthcoming The Everyday Life of Memorials (2022). Current projects analyze imagery in American urban planning.
Recent articles examine pandemic memorials, semantic units in architecture, urban paradigms, and historical preservation, reflecting his interest in cultural memory and architectural theory. He was awarded the Arthur Kingsley Porter Prize (2003) for his work on living memorials during WWII.
