Professor Andrew Roberts is a legal scholar at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. He joined in 2011 after appointments at the Universities of Warwick and Leeds, and held visiting positions at UNSW Law School and Goethe University, Frankfurt. His research spans criminal evidence, privacy law, republican political theory, and the intersection of technology with criminal justice. He co-authored Uniform Evidence (2025) and edited Australian Uniform Evidence Law: Critical Perspectives (2017). His work on eyewitness identification and expert evidence has influenced appellate courts globally. Roberts co-leads an Australian Research Council-funded project (2024-2026) examining Body Worn Cameras' impact on credibility assessments in domestic violence cases, collaborating with Dr. Celine van Golde and Prof. Kim Wade.
His academic writing bridges law and cognitive science, addressing issues like DNA retention, data privacy, and exemplary damages for privacy breaches. He authored Privacy in the Republic (2022), arguing privacy as a collective good against domination. Recent projects include Privacy, Technology, and the Criminal Process (2023), exploring tech’s privacy implications in criminal justice.
Teaching focuses on common law fundamentals at the Melbourne Law Masters. His research emphasizes empirical and interdisciplinary methods, addressing gaps between legal theory and real-world applications. Grants include ARC funding for experimental studies on evidence credibility. He advises on legal reform and policy related to privacy and criminal procedure.
