Andrew Power is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, where he serves as Faculty Director of the Graduate School. He joined the School of Geography and Environmental Science in April 2011 and is an active researcher in social care and disability studies.
His educational background includes a PhD from Maynooth University, Ireland. Previous positions include work at the Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland Galway and the Institute for Health Research at Lancaster University.
Professor Power's research focuses on geographies of social care and support for disabled people, including personalisation, peer-support, and residential care. He also investigates relational geographies of the voluntary sector within the social care landscape and family caregiving dynamics. His work explores how people self-build their lives in the context of personalisation of social care and examines experiences of home by people with learning disabilities in shared care settings.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on disability justice, social care systems, and the lived experiences of people with disabilities. The research spans theoretical explorations of care landscapes and practical investigations into policy implementation, with particular attention to how people with disabilities build meaningful lives within community settings.
Among his notable achievements are:
- Mike Clark Teaching Award (2014)
- Santander UoS Latin America Award (2015)
- Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society-Institute of British Geographers (2007)
Professor Power actively supervises PhD students and serves on editorial boards for prominent journals including Health & Place, Social Science & Medicine, and Scandinavian Journal of Intellectual Disability. He has led major research projects funded by organizations such as the Arts & Humanities Research Council and ESRC, including 'Preserving Place: A Cultural Mapping Exercise' and 'Reclaiming social care: Adults with learning disabilities seizing opportunities in the shift from day services to community lives.'
He is a member of the Geographies of Health and Wellbeing Research Group (formerly chair 2016-2020) and serves on the ESRC and Irish Research Council Peer review college.
