معرفی
Andrew Pennington is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at York St John University within the School of Education, Language and Psychology. Previously serving as a senior officer in local authority education and children’s services departments, his research focuses on democracy in educational governance, youth mental health, and the implications of Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) in England. His work critically examines how neoliberal governance structures affect community engagement and democratic renewal in schools. Pennington’s interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, policy analysis, and educational theory, with a particular emphasis on institutional power dynamics and their societal impacts.
His research interests include the intersection of educational policy and social justice, the mental health consequences of systemic educational reforms, and the historical legacies of influential educational leaders like Sir Alec Clegg. Pennington collaborates with colleagues on studies investigating pandemic effects on youth wellbeing and the misalignment between social mobility rhetoric and actual educational equity.
Publications span peer-reviewed journals such as the Cambridge Journal of Education, International Studies in Sociology of Education, and Research in Education. His doctoral thesis (2022), 'Colonising Communities? Community Engagement, Democracy, and the Articulation of Power in the Governance of Multi-Academy Trusts in England,' further explores these themes.
