Andrew Oliphant is a Professor and Chair in the School of the Environment at San Francisco State University (SFSU), part of the College of Science and Engineering. He has been at SFSU since 2002. His research focuses on interactions between Earth's surface and atmosphere, including carbon and water cycling, urban microclimates, and mountain meadow restoration. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Canterbury (2002).
Research projects include studying carbon dynamics in Sierra Nevada meadows, GHG emissions from agricultural soils, and urban climate mitigation via vegetation. He leads the Bioclimate Lab, involving field-based micrometeorological methods. Key collaborations include work with Earthseed Farm on compost tea impacts and Goldridge Resource Conservation District.
Teaching includes courses such as GEOG101 (Physical Environment), GEOG313 (Climate System), and advanced field methods. His work integrates field experiments, sensor networks, and data analysis to address environmental challenges like climate change and urban heat.
