Andrew Nicholas Miller serves as Principal Mycologist at the Illinois Natural History Survey, University of Illinois, with adjunct appointments in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Illinois, the Botany Department at The Field Museum, and the Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Illinois University. He is curator of the INHS Fungarium and associate curator of the U of I fungarium, and became director of the INHS Herbarium in 2008.
Dr. Miller earned his Ph.D. in 2003 from the University of Illinois at Chicago, following an M.S. (1997) and B.S. (1995) from Eastern Illinois University.
His research focuses on the systematics, evolution, biodiversity, and conservation of fungi, particularly higher fungi (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota). His work employs molecular and morphological data to understand phylogenetic relationships and their implications for fungal classification. Dr. Miller has published over 65 peer-reviewed papers describing evolutionary relationships of numerous fungal taxa new to science, with research spanning North America and the Neotropics. His fingerprint analysis reveals strong emphasis on fungi (100%), cladistics (97%), new species (67%), ascospores (63%), and Ascomycota (47%).
Dr. Miller has received significant recognition including the PRI Distinguished Research Scientist award (2019) and the Eastern Illinois University Outstanding Graduate Alumni Award (2014).

As an active researcher and educator, Dr. Miller teaches the General Mycology course in Plant Biology at the University of Illinois. He was elected secretary of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Fungi in 2011 and serves as associate editor for Fungal Biology, MycoKeys, and Organisms, Diversity and Evolution. His research output includes 211 scholarly works with significant recent contributions focusing on fungal taxonomy, phylogenomics, and ecology across diverse environments from hypersaline lagoons to post-fire ecosystems.
Dr. Miller directs the INHS Herbarium and curates extensive fungal collections at both the Illinois Natural History Survey and the University of Illinois fungariums. His work involves international collaborations across Spain, Australia, Netherlands, and throughout the Americas, reflecting the global nature of fungal biodiversity research and conservation efforts.
