Andrew N. Weintraub is a Professor of Music (Ethnomusicology) at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in the music of Indonesia, particularly Sundanese performing arts, dangdut popular music, and Islamic cultural politics. His research explores music's role in identity formation, postcolonial societies, and cultural rights.
Education: PhD in Ethnomusicology (UC Berkeley, 1997), MA (University of Hawaiʻi, 1990), BA (UC Santa Cruz, 1985). His career includes roles as Director of Graduate Admissions in Music and leadership in gamelan performance programs.
Research interests span ethnomusicology, cultural theory, and Southeast Asian music studies. Key projects include studies on dangdut's social history, sound repatriation in Uganda, and the intersection of Islam and popular culture. Over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including books like Dangdut Stories and Power Plays.
Honors include the Society for Ethnomusicology's Helen Roberts Prize and Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards. Active in international collaborations, such as with Uganda and the Netherlands on music history projects.
Teaching includes courses on ethnomusicology, popular music, and Indonesian music. Advised numerous graduate students and led gamelan ensembles with guest artists from Indonesia.
