Andrew N. Lane is a Professor in the Department of Toxicology and Cancer Biology at the University of Kentucky. He is co-director of the Center for Environmental and Systems Biochemistry (CESB), overseeing NMR facilities. His research focuses on cancer metabolism, biophysics, and immune metabolism, using stable isotope resolved metabolomics (SIRM) to study metabolic pathways in tumors and immune cells. Key areas include lung cancer heterogeneity, tumor microenvironment interactions, and metabolic reprogramming in NSCLC. Collaborations involve physicians, pathologists, and bioinformaticians to integrate genomics, proteomics, and modeling for systems-level insights. Recent work explores immune cell modulation by β-glucan, CAR-T cell metabolism, and adrenergic signaling in tumor immunity. He also investigates metabolic links to epigenetic modifications like DNA methylation and cytosine oxidation.
Education: B.Sc. and Ph.D. from University College London, postdoctoral work at Biozentrum Basel (Switzerland), Stanford, and the National Institute for Medical Research (UK). Career highlights include leading structural biology at the JG Brown Cancer Center before joining UK.
Research interests are structured around three pillars: cellular systems biochemistry (tumor microenvironment), complex systems biochemistry (in vivo metabolism analysis), and integrative systems biochemistry (genetic/computational approaches). Notable contributions include identifying pyruvate carboxylase’s role in NSCLC and improving isotope delivery methods in mouse models. His lab also pioneers structural studies of DNA modifications using X-ray crystallography and NMR.
Selected publications include foundational work on SIRM applications, immune modulation mechanisms, and metabolic pathways in rare kidney cancers. Current projects address metabolic fitness of T cells, mitochondrial dynamics in cancer resistance, and epigenetic control through metabolite availability.
