Andrew Mills

Professor Andrew Mills is a faculty member at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen's University Belfast, where he holds the position of Professor. His research focuses on developing innovative chemical systems with commercial applications, particularly in the areas of photocatalysis and optical sensor technology for healthcare and environmental monitoring.

Professor Mills' diverse research interests include:

• Semiconductor photochemistry and photocatalysis for water and air purification
• Electrochemical and optical sensor development for gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide, and chlorine
• Design and characterization of inorganic materials for redox reactions
• Solar energy conversion through semiconductor photocatalysis
• Intelligent inks and colorimetric indicators for medical and food packaging applications

His recent publications demonstrate a strategic shift toward practical healthcare applications of sensor technology, with significant focus on CO₂ and O₂ detection systems for wound infection monitoring, food safety, and aquaculture. His work has established significant industry partnerships with Pilkington Glass, Johnson and Johnson Medical, Johnson Matthey, and several packaging companies, translating academic research into commercial products like the Shelf Life Guard label which has generated £400k to date.
