Andrew Miles is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography and GIS at the University of Chester, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He specializes in applying geospatial analysis and remote sensing to real-world challenges, collaborating with industries ranging from tech start-ups to local governments. His roles extend beyond teaching to include leadership in employability initiatives, such as Careers & Employability Link Tutor and Undergraduate Assessment Officer.
Andrew holds a PhD in Geography from Lancaster University, an MSc in Environmental Informatics (also from Lancaster), a BSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia, and a PGCert in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Chester. He is a certified Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
His research interests focus on coastal environments, geomatics, and leveraging spatial technologies for sustainable development. Recent work includes the ERDF-funded CREST project, supporting SMEs in Shropshire, and a study analyzing adult safeguarding data in England using GIS. Earlier research applied LiDAR technology to study coastal dynamics in northwest England.
Andrew leads multiple funded projects, including the 2024–2027 River Severn Demonstrator (Environment Agency). His teaching portfolio spans geomatics, coastal processes, and employability modules, with fieldwork leadership in locations like Naples and Snowdonia. He actively bridges academic and industry partnerships through his roles in Industry Advisory Groups.
He contributes to the Sustainability and Environment Research and Knowledge Exchange Institute, advancing interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges. Andrew’s work emphasizes practical applications of geospatial tools, reflecting his commitment to both academic rigor and real-world impact.
