Andrew (Andy) Mehle is a Professor of Medical Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of influenza virus replication and the host-virus interactions that regulate polymerase function, cross-species transmission, and pathogenicity.
- Education:
- BS in Biology (1998), Villanova University
- PhD in Virology (2004), Harvard University
- Postdoctoral Fellow (2005-2011), Jennifer Doudna Lab, University of California, Berkeley
The Mehle Lab investigates how influenza virus co-opts host cellular machinery to replicate. Key themes include: (1) regulation of viral ribonucleoprotein (RNP) assembly through host proteins, (2) molecular mechanisms enabling avian influenza adaptation to humans, and (3) genetic engineering of the influenza genome to develop imaging tools. The lab employs biochemical, structural, and genetic approaches to dissect these processes.
Dr. Mehle received the Shaw Scientist Award in 2012 for his virology research. Work in the lab is funded by grants supporting studies on influenza polymerase dynamics and cross-species transmission. The lab actively collaborates, recruits postdoctoral fellows, and explores innovative strategies to combat viral spread.
