Andrew Marsham

Professor Andrew Marsham is a Professor of Classical Arabic Studies at the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, affiliated with Queens' College. He specializes in the formation of early Islamic political structures and their Late Antique and medieval contexts. His research bridges comparative political culture, document analysis, and historiography.

Education: Studied History at Oxford, pursued postgraduate studies in Arabic and Islamic History, and conducted Arabic studies in Egypt and Syria. His academic journey includes teaching roles at Sheffield, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Cambridge.

Research focuses on Umayyad political systems, medieval chronicles, and ritual practices in early Islam. Key publications include Rituals of Islamic Monarchy (2009) and The Umayyad Empire (2024). He co-edited Power, Patronage, and Memory in Early Islam (2018) and edited The Umayyad World (2021).

Teaching: Leads undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Middle Eastern history and culture. Supervises PhD students researching early Muslim-Jewish relations, classical Sunni historiography, and early Islamic economies.
