Andrew Marriner is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He served as Principal Clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) from 1986 to 2019, succeeding Jack Brymer. Additionally, he was Principal Clarinet of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields until 2008. His career spans solo performances, chamber music collaborations, and orchestral work, including recordings for Oscar-winning films like Amadeus, Braveheart, and The King’s Speech.
His research interests focus on clarinet performance, chamber music interpretation, and pedagogy. He is celebrated for his renditions of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, notably at venues like Vienna’s Musikverein and Milan’s Teatro alla Scala.
- Awards: Hon. RAM (1996).
- Teaching & Mentorship: Taught at institutions including Sydney Conservatory, Juilliard School, and Hong Kong Academy. Coaches orchestras globally and adjudicates competitions. Serves on the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition panel and the Solti Foundation Advisory Committee.
- Ensembles: Collaborated with the Chilingirian, Lindsay, and Belcea String Quartets, alongside artists like Alfred Brendel and André Previn.
