Professor Andrew Lotery is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton. He leads the Vision Science research department and oversees the University Hospital Southampton's medical retinal service. His research focuses on ocular clinical trials, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), central serous chorioretinopathy, and gene therapy. He is currently leading a UK multi-centre clinical trial evaluating photodynamic laser treatment for central serous chorioretinopathy and an international Wellcome Trust-funded project using machine learning to study AMD.
His research has been supported by the NIHR, Wellcome Trust, and various eye research charities. Key awards include the NIHR Senior Investigator (2016), Jesse Mole Medal (2019), and the Paul Henkind Memorial Lecture Award (2024). He has held editorial roles, including Editor-in-Chief of Eye for a decade and currently serves as Honorary Secretary of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Professor Lotery supervises PhD students in clinical and scientific research, including intercalated medical degrees. He teaches medical students and junior ophthalmologists in clinical neurosciences and retinal disease management.
