Andrew Lipman is a Professor of History at Barnard College, Columbia University, where he has taught since 2015. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor at Syracuse University from 2010-2015. His scholarship focuses on the intersections of Native American history, Atlantic World dynamics, environmental conflict, and colonial violence. He received his B.A. (hons) from Vassar College (2001), M.St. (hons) in Modern History from Oxford University (2003), and Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania (2010).
Lipman’s research has been recognized with prestigious awards including the
- Bancroft Prize in American History (2016)
- PROSE Award in Biography (2024)
- Society of Colonial Wars Distinguished Book Award (2024)
- New England Society Book Award in Nonfiction (2024)
His publications analyze maritime Indigenous societies, coercion in colonial land transfers, and the environmental dimensions of early American conflict. He teaches courses including “Early America to 1763” and “A History of Violence” at Barnard, and has led graduate seminars on Native American history at Columbia University.
