Dr. Andrew Lind is a Lecturer of Northern Studies and Acting Head of Postgraduate Research at the Institute for Northern Studies (INS) within the University of the Highlands and Islands. He specializes in early modern history, particularly the British Civil Wars (1638–1655) and the Scottish Royalist movement. His research explores political, religious, and military dynamics in Northern Europe, with a focus on how historical heritage influences modern identities.
Dr. Lind holds a PhD and has authored/co-authored peer-reviewed works, including a monograph with Dr. Edward Furgol. He teaches MLitt modules such as Early Modern Studies and The Wars of the Covenant. He leads INS’s Postgraduate Research program and organizes the Public Seminar Series.
His professional memberships include the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and the Royal Historical Society. Lind has collaborated on projects like the HerInDep initiative examining heritage in depopulated areas and contributed to BBC and Sky History documentaries.
He supervises PhD students researching topics like Orkney’s social history, Highland burial grounds, and post-Cromwellian Royalist ideology. Lind’s work bridges academia and public engagement, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to historical inquiry.
