Andrew Jacobson

Andrew Jacobson is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University, serving as Director of Graduate Studies and a Faculty Affiliate of the Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy. He holds a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Michigan, an M.S. in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College, and a B.A. in Earth Sciences and Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His research focuses on radiogenic isotope geochemistry, low-temperature aqueous geochemistry, and decarbonization strategies, with expertise in calcium and strontium isotope analysis. His laboratory uses thermal ionization mass spectrometry to study paleoclimate and weathering processes, particularly in the context of emerging decarbonization technologies like enhanced rock weathering and carbon mineralization.

Teaching includes courses on Earth systems, aqueous geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, and decarbonization fundamentals. Recent research highlights include a $5M DOE grant for studying enhanced rock weathering in the Midwest and collaborative experiments at the Chicago Botanic Garden. His work bridges fundamental geochemical research with applied climate mitigation strategies, emphasizing the role of mineral weathering in CO₂ removal.

Key projects include investigating basalt weathering dynamics in Iceland and Alaska, analyzing ocean acidification events linked to volcanic activity, and developing isotopic proxies for paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
