Dr. Andrew J. Fraass is Assistant Professor in Earth and Ocean Sciences at University of Victoria's Faculty of Science, leading research on marine plankton responses to historical climate changes through microfossil analysis. Directs the UVic Micropaleontology Lab and eODP database integration project funded by NSF's EarthCube program.
Education:
- PhD Geosciences, UMass Amherst
- MSc Geology, UW-Madison
- BS Zoology & Geology, UW-Madison
Research combines paleobiological patterns with paleoceanographic proxy development to understand pelagic ecosystem vulnerabilities, particularly regarding carbonate compensation mechanisms and biological pump efficiency under climate stress.
Recent publications demonstrate innovative applications of large database approaches to microfossil records, revealing new insights into Cenozoic biogeographic shifts and extinction dynamics.
Supervises graduate students investigating foraminiferal responses to Milankovitch cycles and nutrient fluctuations. Maintains active field programs in Caribbean and Indian Ocean sites.
