Andrew J. Bernoff is a Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, specializing in applied mathematics and mathematical biology. He holds the Diana & Kenneth Jonsson Professorship and has served in leadership roles such as Department Chair (2009-2014), and leadership in organizations like SIAM and the Claremont Center for Mathematical Sciences. His research focuses on swarming behavior, agent-based modeling, fluid mechanics, and pattern formation, with significant contributions to understanding biological aggregations and diffusion-driven phenomena.
His work combines theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and collaborations with experimentalists. Notable achievements include the SIAM Outstanding Paper Award (2013) and Simons Foundation-funded collaborative research on swarms (2014). Bernoff has advised numerous undergraduates, mentoring projects ranging from locust hopper bands to Langmuir films. His studies often bridge mathematical theory with real-world applications in biology, physics, and engineering.
Bernoff’s publications span mathematical biology, fluid dynamics, and nonlinear systems, with recent focus on diffusive capture problems and swarm equilibria. He actively participates in academic service, serving on editorial boards and organizing conferences to promote interdisciplinary research and undergraduate participation in mathematics.
