Andrew J. Berger is a Professor of Optics at the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He joined the university in 2000 after completing his BS in Physics at Yale (1991) and PhD in Physics at MIT (1998), where he worked under Michael Feld. His research focuses on biomedical optics, particularly diagnostic spectroscopic and imaging methods for medical applications. Notable achievements include developing non-invasive methods for bone fracture assessment, cellular scattering analysis, and bruise detection in dark-skinned individuals.
- Recipient of prestigious teaching awards: Goergen Award (2007) and Edward Peck Curtis Award (2016)
- Collaborated internationally as a Guest Professor at the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technologies and Abbe Center of Photonics (2013/14)
- Former postdoctoral fellow at the Beckman Laser Institute (2000)
His research integrates optics with clinical collaboration through proximity to the University of Rochester Medical Center.
