Dr. Andrew J Young serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Physics at the University of Bristol, holding a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (Cantab.). His research centers on high-energy astrophysical phenomena, utilizing space-based X-ray observatories such as Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Suzaku to investigate extreme cosmic environments.
His primary research interests focus on X-ray astronomy, particularly the analysis of million-degree gas in systems involving black holes, active galactic nuclei (AGN), relativistic jets, and galaxy clusters. Key methodologies include spectral and imaging analysis of X-ray emissions, with recent work emphasizing time-domain studies of AGN light curves and reverberation mapping techniques to probe accretion physics.
Recent publications demonstrate a trend toward integrating machine learning (e.g., random forests and autoencoders) with traditional astrophysical analysis to address challenges in X-ray timing products and coronal height constraints. This approach enhances precision in modeling black hole environments while accounting for instrumental effects like NICER deadtime.
Dr. Young actively supervises student research, with 10 supervised works documented, and leads two major funded projects: Time-domain Analysis to study the Life-cycle and Evolution of Supermassive black holes (2025-2028) and Bristol Open-source Relativistic Gravity (2024-2027). He contributes to the Astrophysics research group within the School of Physics, focusing on observational and computational aspects of high-energy phenomena.
