Dr. Andrew J Woo is a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at the School of Medical and Health Sciences, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Joondalup, WA. He also serves as a Research Fellow at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, University of Western Australia. His academic roles include teaching SCH2232 Medical Biochemistry and SCH3244 Developmental Biology.
Dr. Woo holds a PhD from The University of Western Australia (2004) and has extensive international research experience, including postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School (2004–2012). His research focuses on developmental haematopoiesis, blood disorders, cancers, and stem cells, with a particular emphasis on gene regulatory networks and druggable targets for diseases like cancers and blood disorders. He has secured over AUD 700K in research grants and published in high-impact journals including Cell, Cancer Cell, and Nature Communications.
His current research projects include targeting breast cancer stem cells and cellular reprogramming for platelet generation. He is actively supervising postgraduate students in breast cancer research and has led a project identifying an ovarian cancer oncogene (2023–2024).
Dr. Woo is a member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), and Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR). He has received notable awards, including the WA NHMRC Near-miss Awards (2021, 2016) and the RPH Medical Research Foundation Fellowship (2012).
