Andrew J Waters

Andrew J Waters is a Professor in the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), School of Medicine, since 2016. Previously, he served as Director of Graduate Studies (2007-2018) and Associate Professor (2007-2016) at USUHS, and as Assistant Professor at UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (2002-2007).

His educational background is as follows:

Dr. Waters' research focuses on two main areas: (1) the relationship between artificial intelligence and human expertise, and (2) cognitive interventions in addiction. He investigates how AI can enhance human performance and applies cognitive psychology to addiction through ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and intervention (EMI) using mobile devices. His work in the Laboratory of Cognitive Interventions (LOCI) aims to deliver cognitive retraining via smartphones.

His recent publications (2024, 2023, 2012) highlight his interdisciplinary work, covering cognitive models of addiction, the psychology of expertise, and attentional bias in drug addiction.

Dr. Waters teaches courses in Cognitive Psychology, Statistics, and Introduction to AI in Psychological Science. He directs the Laboratory of Cognitive Interventions (LOCI), which focuses on developing and testing cognitive interventions for addiction and other conditions.
